Parkinson's Law: Why Work Expands to Fill the Time You Give It
Have you ever noticed that a project given a month to complete takes exactly a month, while the exact same project given a week somehow gets done in a week? This phenomenon is known as Parkinson's Law, and understanding it is the key to mastering your time.
What is Parkinson's Law?
Coined by Cyril Northcote Parkinson in a 1955 essay for The Economist, Parkinson's Law states: "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion."
If you give yourself an entire evening to write a simple email, it will take the entire evening. You'll overthink the wording, get distracted, grab a snack, and finally hit send hours later. If you give yourself five minutes before a meeting to write the same email, it will take five minutes.
Why We Fall Victim to It
Human beings are wired to conserve energy, but we also hate the anxiety of looming deadlines. When a deadline is far away, the pressure is low, so we procrastinate. As the deadline approaches, the pressure spikes, forcing us into a state of hyper-focus. Parkinson's Law is essentially a psychological trap where we stretch easy tasks into complex monsters simply because we have the time to do so.
How to Defeat Parkinson's Law
1. Set Artificial Deadlines
The most direct counter to Parkinson's Law is to slash your deadlines. If a task normally takes you three hours, challenge yourself to do it in 90 minutes. You will be forced to eliminate fluff and focus only on what matters.
2. Timeboxing
Timeboxing involves allocating a fixed, maximum unit of time for an activity in advance, and then stopping when the time is up. This pairs perfectly with our Countdown Timer. Decide that you will spend exactly 30 minutes researching a topic, set the timer, and when it rings, you must stop.
3. The Pomodoro Technique
A classic time management method, the Pomodoro Technique inherently combats Parkinson's Law by breaking work into 25-minute sprints. Try our Free Pomodoro Timer to keep your focus tight and your breaks refreshing.
